Tweak your Product Titles to Prevent Listing Suppression

While we all aim to set up titles which not only accurately describe our product, but also incorporate valuable keywords and search terms, if they do not also coincide with Amazon’s strict guidelines, your listing may not be displayed in a potential buyer’s search results.

Amazon guidelines are simple enough but are not often referenced when we add or attach to a product in the Amazon catalog. Even Amazon warns that failure to comply ‘may cause a product to be suppressed from Amazon search results.’

The obvious obstacle a seller will face from noncompliance is a lost sale. The trickle-down effect can damage your seller account. For example, when your sales decrease, your sales velocity or sell-through rate will also decrease affecting your Best-Seller Rating. It can also cause your inventory score and storage to be reduced if not corrected. Building back your momentum on Amazon takes time. It is best to follow the guidelines and check your listings often to ensure another seller hasn’t negatively contributed to product title.

If you do not have Brand Registry, which protects against harmful contributions from unauthorized sellers, and you find the title has been altered and no longer complies with Amazon guidelines, you can contact Amazon support and request your title be used.

According to Amazon, the FBA product title requirements are as follows:

Title requirements apply to all non-media products on all of Amazon’s worldwide marketplaces, whether you use Fulfillment by Amazon or the Merchant Fulfillment Network. Amazon has four main criteria for product titles:

  1. Titles must not exceed 200 characters, including spaces.

  2. Titles must not contain promotional phrases, such as “free shipping”, “100% quality guaranteed”.

  3. Titles must not contain characters for decoration, such as ~ ! $ ? _ ~ { } # < > | ; ^

  4. Titles must contain product-identifying information, such as “hiking boots” or “umbrella”.

Failure to comply with these requirements may cause a product to be suppressed from Amazon search results.
